MOT: We are Committed to reduce road accident mortality by 25%


 


The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that MOT will continue to work on the initiative of reducing the number of road accident mortality by 25 % by the year 2020. The Kingdom ranks 157 out of 180 countries in road safety, according to the World Health Organization.


HE Dr. Nabil bin Mohammed Al-Amoudi, Minister of Transport, said: "Our aim at this stage of the campaign is to clarify the role of the Ministry of Transport and shed light on the projects carried out by the Ministry's team to reduce the number of road accident mortalities. The reports stated that the losses of human lives are 28 mortalities for every 100,000 people, and we seek to reduce this number as much as possible to make the Kingdom's roads safe by reducing the human and the material losses that exhaust the national economy."


Dr. Al-Amoudi pointed out that the initiative to reduce road accident mortalities is a major concern for the transport sectors officials as it affects every individual in the Saudi community. Therefore, it is on top of the ministry's initiatives list to achieve the kingdom's 2030 vision goals. "We work with the support of all the concerned parties; The Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Commerce and Investment, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and Information, and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and in collaboration with a number of partners such as the Public Transport Authority, the Saudi Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality and Red Crescent under the supervision of the Ministerial Committee of Traffic Safety."


HE added that this campaign aims to explain the projects and programs related to road safety based on international best practices, detecting and repairing defected road sites, provide them with the necessary safety elements, support and develop the trucks weighing stations and determine the permissible loads and sizes.

 

The Ministry of Transport is monitoring road traffic using modern technology then publish periodic report and data on its website as part of a project to provide data and information and calibrate them. Beside, implement the technical support project to raise the level of road safety. The Ministry is also working on implementing the vibratory warning initiative on high-speed roads and the work is going on another campaign to raise the awareness of the importance of safety on the road, in addition to encourage community participation to raise road safety.

The Ministry of Transport has implemented projects and programs to reduce road accident mortalities, including the development of road safety data management program and the analysis system, to integrate various data sources from the Ministry of Transport and other parties then process them. Also, present safety performance indicators to support decision makers in monitoring the Road safety program and the impact of its policies.


The Ministry of Transport started the first step in activating the intelligent transport system in Riyadh city to manage the traffic on the ministry roads. The Ministry has begun the experimental phase, for the results will be used to improve the system to be able to solve traffic congestion on main roads.


It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Transport has launched "Our destination .. is your destination" campaign in order to achieve integration between the transport sectors, land, sea, air and rails, in line with the need for an advanced transport system that will contributes to the transfer of international expertise and experience and encourage the development of national carriers. The integration will achieve the Kingdom's objectives in diversifying its economy through developing the transport sector and its impact on the growth of the economic activities.​
